Oil Filled Switchgear – Is it Time to Upgrade?
Absolute operational certainty is vital when it comes to high voltage switchgear. Oil filled switchgear can be prone to failure, faults & requires meticulous maintenance procedures, all resulting in prolonged power outage time which can be detrimental to any business. Operational restrictions, imposed on most fused types of oil filled switchgear, can also be a hindrance in terms of site network power control. IUS’ vast experience working with high voltage oil switchgear has made us aware of the dangers. Some of the main failure modes of dated oil filled switchgear are:
• Faults within oil compartments
• Failure of circuit breaker tripping (which may result in an extended disconnection time due to fault clearance by upstream equipment)
• Solid insulation faults i.e. porcelain bushings and mouldings (external to oil chambers)
• Contaminated insulating oil
• Making or breaking fault current above the rated capability (in case of a circuit-breaker)
• Internal component failure
• Aged mechanism failure
• Compound boxes leaking
• Moisture ingress into oil chambers of outdoor equipment
It may be time to consider upgrading obsolete oil filled switchgear for a modern, newly manufactured alternative.
Through our trusted supply chain IUS can offer replacement alternatives tailored to the requirements of your site. All new switchgear comes with a 12-month warranty guarantee from commissioning date. For further information, or an initial discussion regarding replacement switchgear options please do not hesitate to contact us at email@example.com. One of our Business Development staff would be happy to attend meeting.

Balancing our Carbon Footprint
IUS has a strong commitment to communities and the environment, as a reflection of this, we are working with Forest Carbon to mitigate the emissions of our fleet vehicles via UK woodland creation.
In partnership with Forest Carbon Limited, IUS has enabled the planting of 880 trees, in Joanna’s Wood, County Durham. The trees cover over 1 hectare and 378 tonnes of CO2 will be captured over their lifetime, which offsets 1 year of the CO2 produced by our commercial fleet vehicles.
Joanna’s Wood is a native broadleaf woodland and is positioned adjacent to the B6310, between the villages of Shortly Bridge and Medomsley in County Durham. The woodland comprises of Oak, Birch, Alder, Cherry Maple and Rowan.
The trees planted will also provide a resource for the local community to enjoy as it is accessible to the public and will provide a welcome home for local wildlife.
