IUS Corona (Covid19) Statement
CORONAVIRUS (COVID 19) ? Update
ISO 45001 Accreditation
IUS has recently been successful in obtaining ISO 45001:2018 certification for Occupational Health and Safety Management.
This accreditation is designed to improve employee safety, reduce workplace risks and create safer working conditions.
IUS going Carbon Neutral
IUS have planted over 5,000 native trees in partnership with Forest Carbon Limited.
By supporting the creation of a new woodland at Mallerstang, North Yorkshire along with the Joanna's Wood development in Durham, the IUS commercial fleet can now be classified as Carbon Neutral for the period of certification.
IUS Commitment to Quality & Environmental Standards
Following a successful audit of our quality and environmental management systems by LRQA, IUS has been re-certified under the ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 accreditations, reaffirming our commitment to the highest standards throughout all of our activities.
Your Network in Safe Hands
As well as the design, procurement and construction of High Voltage assets, we also specialise in the inspection and maintenance of substations. This includes operational switching activities and the provision of safety documentation via our senior authorised personnel.
The volume of assets our specialist High Voltage Customer Service team inspect and maintain are as follows: -
• Inspection of c. 3,169 privately owned substations
• Maintenance of 9,695 items of substation plant equipment including;
- 2,858 oil insulated transformers
- 2,429 items of oil filled switchgear
- 1277 items of SF6 switchgear
- 1037 items of vacuum switchgear
- 299 air cooled/ cast resin transformers
- 1795 items of substation ancillary equipment
Our skilled and competent resource are trained and authorised to assist High Voltage network owners with their substation assets.
As well as planned inspection and maintenance, our Operation & Maintenance contract provides a 24/7 emergency call out response.

IUS making a BUZZ at 2019 Scottish Water Supply Chain Conference
Delegates created a real buzz while taking part in the IUS Buzzwire Challenge at the recent Scottish Water Supply Chain Conference at Glasgow’s Crowne Plaza Hotel on the banks of the Clyde.
IUS were pleased to be invited by Scottish Water to showcase our capabilities at the Scottish Water Supply Chain Conference in April 2019. The event focused on the performance and future strategy of the supply chain framework on which IUS have delivered Single Source Power Upgrades for all new and upgraded sites for more than a decade.
The exhibition was an ideal opportunity for IUS to demonstrate its expertise in the Competition in Connections (CiC) market together with our work in private network infrastructure.
An element of fun was incorporated into our exhibition as delegates used steady hands to complete the 8ft long Buzzwire game. Of course safety was to the fore as participants wore an IUS Arc Flash Jacket whilst navigating game.
Debbie Deans (Senior Technical Coordinator) and Steven Robertson (Business Development – Scotland) were on hand to welcome delegates while Gary Milne (Contract Manager) represented IUS as a delegate at the conference.
Oil Filled Switchgear – Is it Time to Upgrade?
Absolute operational certainty is vital when it comes to high voltage switchgear. Oil filled switchgear can be prone to failure, faults & requires meticulous maintenance procedures, all resulting in prolonged power outage time which can be detrimental to any business. Operational restrictions, imposed on most fused types of oil filled switchgear, can also be a hindrance in terms of site network power control. IUS’ vast experience working with high voltage oil switchgear has made us aware of the dangers. Some of the main failure modes of dated oil filled switchgear are:
• Faults within oil compartments
• Failure of circuit breaker tripping (which may result in an extended disconnection time due to fault clearance by upstream equipment)
• Solid insulation faults i.e. porcelain bushings and mouldings (external to oil chambers)
• Contaminated insulating oil
• Making or breaking fault current above the rated capability (in case of a circuit-breaker)
• Internal component failure
• Aged mechanism failure
• Compound boxes leaking
• Moisture ingress into oil chambers of outdoor equipment
It may be time to consider upgrading obsolete oil filled switchgear for a modern, newly manufactured alternative.
Through our trusted supply chain IUS can offer replacement alternatives tailored to the requirements of your site. All new switchgear comes with a 12-month warranty guarantee from commissioning date. For further information, or an initial discussion regarding replacement switchgear options please do not hesitate to contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org. One of our Business Development staff would be happy to attend meeting.

Balancing our Carbon Footprint
IUS has a strong commitment to communities and the environment, as a reflection of this, we are working with Forest Carbon to mitigate the emissions of our fleet vehicles via UK woodland creation.
In partnership with Forest Carbon Limited, IUS has enabled the planting of 880 trees, in Joanna’s Wood, County Durham. The trees cover over 1 hectare and 378 tonnes of CO2 will be captured over their lifetime, which offsets 1 year of the CO2 produced by our commercial fleet vehicles.
Joanna’s Wood is a native broadleaf woodland and is positioned adjacent to the B6310, between the villages of Shortly Bridge and Medomsley in County Durham. The woodland comprises of Oak, Birch, Alder, Cherry Maple and Rowan.
The trees planted will also provide a resource for the local community to enjoy as it is accessible to the public and will provide a welcome home for local wildlife.
