OVERVIEW

As part of Fingal County Council's Climate Action Plan, Balbriggan Depot is being upgraded to accommodate the electrification of the Council's vehicle fleet. The existing electrical infrastructure at the depot is insufficient to support the increased power demand associated with electric vehicle (EV) charging. To
address this, a new electrical distribution facility and associated civil infrastructure are being constructed to facilitate the installation of high capacity EV chargers and ensure the depot can meet future operational requirements. The proposed works comprise the construction of the civil, drainage, and utility infrastructure
necessary to support the new EV charging network. These works will provide the foundations, services, and ancillary infrastructure required for the safe and efficient operation of the charging facilities.

DESCRIPTION

As part of the EV charging infrastructure upgrade, a reinforced concrete wall was constructed to provide both structural support and protection for critical electrical infrastructure. This ensured the long-term resilience and safety of the installation within the operational depot environment. A comprehensive drainage system was installed, including new drainage pipes and manholes, to effectively manage surface water runoff across the site. The design incorporated accessible inspection points to facilitate future maintenance and ensure the ongoing performance of the drainage network.

To support the electrical infrastructure, ESB ducting was installed between the new Low Voltage (LV) Room and the EV distribution box chamber. This provides a dedicated route for power cables supplying the EV charging equipment. Additional power and communications ducting was installed from the distribution chamber to each charging location, enabling the delivery of both electrical supply and data connectivity required for charger operation, monitoring, and maintenance.

New full-depth concrete parking bays were constructed to create durable, purpose-built EV charging spaces capable of accommodating regular vehicle movements and operational demands. The project was completed with the application of line markings and EV logos, clearly identifying the charging bays, improving traffic management, and enhancing the user experience within the depot.
